When is it Acceptable to Hit a Woman?

Today in the news, Ray Rice has pled not guilty to aggravated assault charges against his then-girlfriend-now-wife,  Janay Palmer. The incident occurred in Atlantic City over Valentines Day weekend, documented by a security camera, and then released by TMZ. The video showed Rice dragging an unconscious Palmer out of an elevator. Before Palmer was rendered unconscious, she and Rice engaged in an argument, which resulted in each party throwing punches. Rice's blow, as confirmed by police, knocked Palmer unconscious.

After the incident, there was a great deal of conversation and controversy regarding Rice hitting his girlfriend. The majority of the conversations centered around the topic of domestic violence, and whether it was ever acceptable for a man to hit a woman. On the radio, I heard a radio announcer speak disparagingly of Rice, and said that he did not agree with Rice's actions at all. A caller was featured on the show, and said, "Ray Rice didn't do anything we don't do. That's how we deal with our women in Baltimore". This statement by this anonymous caller distressed me, because this seems to be a belief held by many people--that women who are abused get what they deserve, and they must be kept in line by male force.

The question posed by this event is this: could Ray Rice, a professional football player--weighing over 200 lbs, ever be for justified for hitting a woman? Shockingly, the country has decided that the answer to this question could perhaps be, "maybe".

However, in order to enlighten those who are uncertain, I have compiled a list of three situations where it is acceptable for a man to hit a woman because she "deserves" it:

1) Never

2) Under no circumstances

3) When hell freezes over

Although I believe Ray Rice is guilty of domestic violence, whether he is convicted is not necessarily the issue at large. The real issue is that so many people are aware of what Rice has done, and still make excuses for his behavior and treatment of his girlfriend. In fact, those who answered "maybe" to the question posed above, argued that in some situations, it may be necessary for a man to resort to violence. For example, some argued that it was acceptable for a man to hit a woman if she hit him first, and he was retaliating out of "self defense".

Women are not immune from having fiery tempers, and they have started fights with men before. I am not defending this behavior or diminishing their actions. However, men are biologically stronger than women; this is a fact. I believe that I am athletic and strong, yet I could still not compete with a man in a battle of strength. No matter how offensive a woman's actions may be against a man, it does not give him the justification to resort to violence against women. The only "self defense" scenario that I can realistically conceive, is if a woman is armed with a weapon and is readily charging a man with the intent to kill. In this case, it would be acceptable to fight back in order to stay alive, and the "self defense" argument would be valid.

However, most of the instances of "self defense" against women are not actually due to fear for their lives, but because they believe that she deserves it. They do it because they are frustrated at the woman, and the only way they can diffuse the situation and remain in control, is if they hit her. This is not being a "man", this is being a bully and a coward. I find it ironic that weeks before Ray Rice got arrested for assault, he spoke at Bel Air high school in Maryland, about the negative effects of bullying. Does he not realize that his actions are conducive to being the worst kind of bully--one that uses his size in order to impose upon a weaker person?

Though the court in New Jersey was reluctant to throw the "book" at Ray Rice, maybe his adoring public should throw Webster's Dictionary at him, and tell him to look up the meaning of the word "bully".

Media's Impact on a Child's Self Perception

Children in the modern age grow up in a society that is consumed with all genres of media. Television, the Internet, movies, music videos, magazines, and fashion advertisements are just a few media outlets that adolescents are exposed to on a daily basis. According to the NEDA, 80% adolescents from the ages of 8-18 are exposed to 6-7.5 hours of different kinds of media per day. 

Over the past two decades, there has been a significant link drawn between the consumption of media and body dissatisfaction disorders. It is clear through viewing media from many years ago, that the ideal female's body has transformed into a leaner, and thinner frame. Conversely, the ideal male body has become stronger, sturdier, and more muscular through the years. Since children view a great deal of media, it is evident that their perception of what is physically attractive has been shaped by what they see, which could account for the shocking statistics of the number of children who view their bodies in a negative way. 

 Here are two actresses on the Disney Channel that are popular right now (I chose these actresses because my younger sister idolizes them, not solely based on their appearance):

Research has shown that young, female children are more likely to be dissatisfied by their appearance, even more so than young boys. Studies have also indicated that among the young girls, those aged in the early to middle teens were especially impressionable. Many of the young women who wished to be thin, exerted that the media played a strong role in why they believed they should lose weight. 

It is also evident that children who are not even in their teen years suffer from body dissatisfaction disorders. An elementary school teacher remarked that it was clear from her experience, that children are becoming obsessed with how they look, and how they compare to others. 
 "Parents were calling schools to say their children were stressing about what to wear on non-uniform days, or for friends' birthday parties, or for the school disco," says Hutchinson. "The more we looked into it, the more we discovered what a problem it was. By the age of 10, around a third of all girls, and 22% of boys, say how their bodies look is their number one worry. And 10 is also the average age when children start dieting."
A different study was conducted by The British Psychological Society, which focused on analyzing whether young female children, ages 3-6 exhibited any body dissatisfaction disorders caused by Disney Princess media. The children were asked a series of questions in order to gain data on the subject. The young girls were asked what princess they would rather be: one picture being a thin princess, and the other being "average". In general, 5- and 6-year-olds selected significantly thinner figures compared with 3- and 4-year-olds. This could possibly illustrate that there is a shift in cognitive development at the age of 5, in which children are able to compare between themselves and the appearance of an image. The study concluded that it is also possible that as young girls become older, their ideal size decreases, while their perceived size remains the same or increases. It is also important to note that according the study, approximately one- third of all the interviewed girls desired a thinner ideal figure compared to their current frame. This trend could reflect how the media can affect children as young as 5 years old, and continue to affect them throughout adolescence. 

Although there are many benefits to the media of the 21st century, there are also some consequences. With the click of a button, children are bombarded with images and videos from the media that shape how they behave, treat others, and see themselves. Left untreated and unmonitored, these impressionable children could develop a negative perception of themselves, which could lead to severe body dismorphic diseases in their future. I think about my younger sister, who is only in middle school, yet constantly asks me if I think she is pretty. I believe it is important to stress to children that they should not let their appearance define who they are. I've found when you let your physicality determine your happiness and self worth, you will consequently be left feeling disappointed, unfulfilled, and not content.

Girls in the Magazines

A young Hungarian singer, Boggie, recently released a music video for her song, "Nouveau Parfum" which is quickly becoming mainstream. The video has received a great deal of attention from American viewers, because the singer touched on a very controversial topic: the use of photoshop in the media. In the video, Boggie's moving image is shown being retouched and transformed throughout a series of brushing, erasing, brightening and coloring techniques. Although she is a very attractive woman naturally, as shown in the beginning of the video, Boggie is molded into a very glamorized and seemingly flawless version of herself. 


These kinds of videos have starting surfacing over the past few years, showing the viewers that natural celebrities and models often look completely different than their photoshopped counterparts. The pictures that are presented to culture through the media, exhibit a "perfection" that we know does not exist. The media is saturated with gorgeous models (male and female) that have alluring eyes, flawless skin, and flowing hair. As viewers, many do not grasp the power that photoshop and professional photography have. I believe it will be helpful for consumers to fully understand how photoshop is utilized, and I think this music video by Boggie helps shed light on the uses of photoshopping. 

I am studying Graphic Design, and I am well educated in many different photoshop softwares. I also know a good deal about photography, so I know the tricks of the trade. In projects, editors obviously try to make an image look better after editing than the original image. These softwares are truly incredible inventions; you can literally CHANGE your appearance however you like through a series of tools that smooth, erase, brighten, and blur. Through editing, you can make small scale changes, like erasing blemishes, smoothing complexions, brightening eyes and skin. Large scale photoshop operations are almost frightening--skin tone alterations, thinning of body parts, and hair changes are more drastic changes that are used often. Seeing the before and after photographs, the model can sometimes look like a completely different person at the end of the session. 

I know exactly how photoshop is used because I can do it myself. Since I know how to do this, seeing advertisements that feature beautiful models, does not really affect me the way it could affect an uneducated viewer. 

Overall, I do not think that Photoshop is necessarily an evil software. It is also used for artistic purposes, and is extremely helpful in creating beautiful images. I do think that fashion magazines and beauty advertisements take these techniques too far at times, like in changing a model's body shape to make her thinner, bustier, and overall--"sexier". I think these companies should keep the models looking as natural as possible, because there is nothing wrong with their bodies and appearance in real life, and impacts how consumers view themselves. Boggie is taking a very brave stand, showing her natural appearance being photoshopped into an almost unrecognizable version of herself. This video shows to the public just how powerful these softwares can be, and mainly that girls in the magazines, probably don't even look like the girls in the magazines.

The Socially Destructive B-Word


Lupe Fiasco's recent track "B*tch Bad", attempts to examine the complications and insinuations of the b-word, which is used so frivolously in today's culture; specifically in hip hop music. In the song, Fiasco depicts the contradictory uses of the b-word, and how women and men use this term differently. In the track, Fiasco explains that young women are listening to hip hop music in particular, and equalize being a "bad b*tch" with being sexually appealing, strong and cool. Thus, these young women unknowingly self objectify themselves by dressing in provocative ways, and referring to themselves as "bad b*tches" in order to fit a stereotype of what they believe certain men want. In one portion of the song, Lupe Fiasco raps from a young man's perspective. This young man grew up with a strong mother, and was not attracted to one of the young women who was attempting look like a "bad b*tch":

      
       "Momma never dressed like that, 
         come out the house hot mess like that
         A**, titties, dressed like that, all out to impress like that
         Just like that, you see the confusion
         He caught in a reality, she caught in an illusion"

Lupe Fiasco, by writing this stanza, is explaining that because of the way the word “b*tch” is used so frequently in music and today's culture, many young women start thinking that they need to fit the stereotype associated with loose provocative clothing, but instead of empowering themselves, they are succumbing to the illusion created by misogynistic music. 

In society, it is clear that the term, "b*tch" has dramatically become mainstream. In popular culture and every day life, men and women both use the term "b*tch" as an epithet against women, and non conventional men. By declaring a person to be the b-word, that individual is then devalued and dehumanized. 

A literal "b*tch" as most people know, is a female dog. Historically, these dogs that are in heat experience a change in personality for a short period of time, and owners can usually tell when their dogs undergo this change, because it is evident in how they behave. Women have been referred to in this way for many years, perhaps even dating back to the 1400s. The connotation of this term was a bit more severe back then, because it was equating a particular woman who had low morals to be that of a dog. It was also used specifically in reference to a woman's sexuality, in that a woman who was called a "b*tch" was even lesser than a prostitute, because prostitutes received payment in money for sex, whereas these women did not. In Greco/Roman culture, the goddess Artemis (Diana) was commonly depicted with dogs, or even as a dog herself. Those who opposed this polytheism referred to Artemis' followers as a "sons of a b*tch", which is a common derogatory phrase used today as well.

In modern day, it is clear that this word has certainly not dropped off the radar screen, in that it is seen regularly in the media and in everyday conversations. Just listening to music, the b-word is uncensored, and is usually always in reference to a woman. Kanye West recently came out with a song entitled, "Perfect B*tch", which is a song about Kim Kardashian. We still hear phrases by men and women alike saying, "she's a b*tch", which is referring negatively about a certain woman. It's even used in other situations like, "that test was a real b*tch"! In this case, it is clear that the test or any other object or scenario described this way, was extremely unpleasant and negative. I have also heard the phrase, "I bent it over and made it my b*tch", which is something that people throw around. This phrase is in my opinion, the worst of them all. Not only does it have a rape-like connotation, but it equalizes the term "b*tch" (women) to being dominated and controlled in a violent way. 

Some women nowadays are attempting to "reclaim" the b-word, and instead use it as a compliment rather than a criticism. But I argue that this term was originally intended to dehumanize women, so why attempt to reclaim a word that is so destructive? I feel that in "reclaiming" this word, women are actually just reinforcing the sexism that promoted it in the first place. 


Words have a powerful and lasting effect on individuals and culture. They can elevate and bring people together, or they can destroy. Women must understand and grasp the meaning of this destructive and pervasive word, and cease using this term to describe themselves and other women. This word is in no form a compliment, and should not be considered acceptable. By women using this term commonly to refer to themselves and each other, it is sending a conflicting message to men, and allows them to use this term. Since the b-word is so derogatory and dehumanizing, it is crucial that men and women alike stop throwing this term around, for it will most likely only cause further social destruction and promote inequality.

Lifetime Channel...and Lady Terps?

I am a sports fan. I love to play sports and I thoroughly enjoy watching great athletes (male and female) compete at the highest level. That is why I am so disturbed about comments and opinions that were stated this morning on the Norris and Davis Show, on CBS Baltimore's 105.7 FM, "The Fan".

One of the co-hosts,  Steve Davis, said that he watched a small portion of the Lady Terps victory over Louisville in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament game on Monday night. He said that he did not like to watch women's sports because they were boring. He further stated that he liked watching the men's college basketball teams play because, in his words, "they can do things that I can't". The women, he said, do things that "he could do". He further stated that the number one high school boy's team in Maryland (he did not say who that was), would have no problem defeating the Lady Terps. This mystery male team would have "no problem" defeating the Lady Terps, who have won 26 games this season and have advanced to the "Final Four" in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament -- I only wish they could arrange that game. I would pay to watch.

He did say, however, that he enjoyed watching one particular women's player because she "is so attractive". Through this remark, it is not a stretch to conclude that this particular athlete is not respected for her abilities, but is instead objectified because she is good-looking. Perhaps most infuriating, though, is what happened after Mr. Davis continued to opine about why the women's basketball games are so inferior to the men. A listener to the show texted a message to Mr. Davis that asked, "and did you watch the Lifetime channel after you watched the Lady Terps"? This comment insinuates that if Mr. Davis, or any man, watches females play a competitive sport, it makes them less masculine. It also mocks men who may enjoy watching the Lady Terps play basketball, by equating watching competitive female sports with watching traditionally female television channel.

As a female athlete, it is discouraging to hear comments of this nature. All college athletes work exceptionally hard and are in incredible physical condition. Where Mr. Davis went wrong was when he criticized and embarrassed female athletes by diminishing their accomplishments. I won't mention that the Maryland's men's basketball team has failed to make the NCAA tournament for the last seven years. I shouldn't have to. I am a sports fan -- and I know how difficult it is to compete. Evidently, Mr. Davis has forgotten.

300: Rise of a Wannabe Feminist Empire

I recently saw the movie 300: Rise of an Empire, which is the sequel to the action packed movie 300, which was released 7 years ago. Although it was entertaining and contained interesting special effects, the film did not portray women as progressively as many suggest.

First, I will give a bit of background on the events and characters, and why I believe that this is not an empowering film for women. (Hint: There may be a few spoilers!)

Themistocles is an Athenian politician-soldier who is the male protagonist in the film. Themistocles is the leader of Greece, and desires for the city-states to all unite together to defeat King Xerxes and his evil naval commander and advisor, a woman named Artemesia.

Artemesia plays a dominant role in the film and exists mainly as a damaged mechanism of revenge. It is accounted by Themistocles, that Artemesia is actually Greek by birth. When she was a child, her mother was raped by a group of Greek soldiers, and her family was killed in front of her. She alone was a survivor of the attack, but was taken captive by the Greek soldiers.

Upon captivity, she was forced into sexual slavery for many years until she was abandoned by her captors and rescued by a Persian warlord (coincidentally, the man who was kicked by Leonidas into the bottom of the pit in the first movie). The warlord trains Artemesia in the art of war and conquest, and she becomes a very feared, yet respected naval commander for King Darius and then to his son Xerxes, upon Darius' death.

Artemesia convinces a grief stricken son, Xerxes, to avenge his father's death and defeat the Greeks once and for all.  In the midst of this battle, the directors found it necessary to insert a sex scene between Artemesia and Themistocles. Upset by recent Persian defeats in the battles against the Greeks, Artemesia invited Themistocles to her quarters to "negotiate". However, her true intent was to seduce him and persuade him to join forces with her. The two engage in a rough, (almost rape-like) sex scene, which given Artemesia's background, was a bit disturbing. Commentators have argued that this scene is "empowering" for women because Artemesia initiated the encounter, but I would argue differently. The fact that Artemesia did not have confidence in her military abilities and had to sexualize herself in order to have a shot at winning against the Greeks is not empowering at all, and is downright offensive. In addition, seducing Themistocles did not even work, for as soon as he had sex with her and got what he wanted, he left and returned to the Greek camp. Empowering?

In addition, Artemesia and King Xerxes had an argument about battle tactics toward the end of the film. The argument ended with a hard slap in the face to Artemesia, which resulted in a bloody nose and her falling to the ground. This scene depicted that although she was respected as a military commander, Artemesia was not respected as a woman, and Xerxes did not consider her to be on his level even though she had been controlling the armies on the front lines of battle. One must ask, does this scene glorify violence towards women in certain situations?

Further, Artemesia represents a typical female character stereotype found in the film industry. She has been abused, and therefore, has become violent with an unquenchable desire for vengeance. In the eyes of viewers, she is psychotic and evil, even though she does not act much differently than the protagonist. These qualities eventually lead to Artemesia's dramatic demise at the end of the film, in which she is killed as a result of what she has done.

Perhaps the writers of this film were genuinely trying to give women a strong female character in an action movie, but it missed the mark. Artemesia is portrayed as aggressive, revenge driven, and is supposedly a military mastermind--qualities that are usually assigned to men. However, despite the fact that she has these qualities, her character is sexualized in the scene between she and Themistocles, which proves that she is not as competent as he, for she had to rely on her sexuality in order to gain the upper hand in the battle of Artemesium, which she lost anyway.

Army General Accused of Sex Crimes

Brig. Gen. Jeffery A. Sinclair has made headlines in the news for being the highest ranking U.S. Army Official to be charged with sexual assault. Sinclair, 51, has recently been accused of 8 counts of sexual misconduct including forcible sodomy, indecent acts, and violating orders and conduct unbecoming of an officer. Sinclair has pled not guilty to these accusations, but has admitted to engaging in a 3 year long extramarital affair with a junior officer. That admission alone will assuredly end his 28 year long military career, for that is a violation of the military code of conduct.

Sinclair is also alleged to have been involved in sexual misconduct with other female subordinate officers, and they declare that they are willing to testify in court that he implored them to provide nude photos of themselves.

 This event is only one of the recently publicized sexual misconduct cases that is embarrassing the Pentagon.

According to military data, 1 out of 8 sexual assaults are reported by victims. This is a shocking statistic. Pentagon officials have disclosed that sexual assaults have increased by 35% from 2010-2012, with an annual total of about 26,000 sexual assaults per year. The Department of Veteran affairs also determined that 85,000 U.S. veterans received treatment for sexual abuse in 2012.

Congress is now pushing to remove the prosecutions of sex crimes from the military chain of command, demonstrating that they do not have complete confidence in the way the military handles sex crimes. Military officials hope that in 2014, there will be less sexual assaults and more reports of these crimes. With an increase in reports, victims can have a voice and those who harmed them can be punished.

The branches of the military defend America against those who try to harm us. However, those service members need the same assurance that they will be defended against those who harm them as well.

Beauty Inside

Wacoal Thailand is the Thai division of the clothing distributor, Wacoal. Lately this company has been trending a great deal on YouTube, as well as blogs across the world. 

The reason for this sudden burst in popularity is due to the latest three short films that Wacoal has created and distributed across Thailand entitled, "My Beautiful Woman".  Each film is based on a true story, and follows the lives of several women who have demonstrated courage, strength, and unconditional love. Each video is touching and emotional in a unique way, narrated by someone who was affected by the actions of the featured woman, and describes her as being truly beautiful. 

Instead of focusing on outward beauty, the short films emphasize and display Wacoal's mission statement: "Wacoal believes all women were created to be beautiful...Beauty inside". This is a powerful message that counteracts society's depiction of beauty--the aesthetic. 

The video featured below is one of the three short films Wacoal recently released. It focuses on Jane, a young and single mother struggling to raise her daughter, June. By all accounts, Jane is a normal teen mom trying to give her child excellent opportunities with her head held high, while attempting to ignore the vicious judgement around her. 

Those around Jane look down on her because they believe she became pregnant by her "sugar daddy", and talk about her behind her back. However, we see in the film that there is much more to Jane than what meets the eye. 



The twist in the Jane's story is seen when her friend, June's art teacher, asks Jane why she does not tell people the truth about her daughter and clear her name. Jane responds simply, "It is not necessary...I would rather them talk about me than talk about June".

The truth that Jane refuses to tell society around her is that she did not bear a child at all; June is not her baby. A flashback scene shows Jane walking home from school one day, and heard the sound of a baby crying. The cries were coming from a suitcase in the middle of a field, clearly an attempt to abandon a child and let it die in the elements. Jane became overwhelmed with emotion and picked up the baby, then made the life altering decision to keep her and raise her as if she was her own.

The reason why Jane refused to tell others the truth about June's life is simple: she did not want her daughter whom she loved more than anything, to feel set apart for being abandoned as a baby. The fact that June is not truly her biological child is irrelevant according to Jane, for she loves her unconditionally and the bond between them is so powerful.

This is only one short film that Wacoal released, all of them being equally emotional and inspiring. The truth is, women are all created beautiful, just like Wacoal expressed at the end of the film. True beauty does not come from the outside, but it comes from within. Mass media and popular culture have unfortunately redefined beauty, and have overemphasized the physical appearance rather than the virtue and character of an individual. Wacoal, a clothing company, is revolutionizing the retail world by emphasizing the fact that despite what society preaches, what makes a woman truly beautiful is her character, her strength, her compassion, and her virtue. Wacoal is arguing that true beauty cannot be seen on a magazine or on someone walking down the street, it is seen in someone's heart.

Gender Equality of Olympic Proportions

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi marks the first time in Olympic history that women are permitted to compete in ski jumping.

For many years, the International Olympics Committee (IOC), has given excuses as to why the sport for women is not recognized in the Olympic Games. One reason they gave was that the sport had few female participants, and it would not be an equal playing field amongst countries, seeing that some countries don't participate in women's ski jumping at all.

However, many female athletes believed that this was more of an equality and discriminatory issue, than merely a lack of competitors. Since the Victorian Era, there was a stigma against female athletes, particularly those in this sport. It was a common theory during that time in history that the impact of landing on skis would actually damage a woman's reproductive organs, since according to medical doctrine of that time, women were very fragile and could not sustain the impact as well as men. Even in 2005 the President of the International Ski Foundation, Gian Franco Kasper, stated: 
"Don't forget, it's like jumping down from, let's say, about two meters on the ground about a thousand times a year, which seems not to be appropriate for ladies from a medical point of view". 
Lindsay Van, an outspoken female ski jumper responded to Kasper in a very creative and colorful way:
"It just makes me nauseous. Like, I kind of want to vomit. Like, really? Like, I'm sorry, but my baby-making organs are on the inside. Men have an organ on the outside. So if it's not safe for me jumping down, then my uterus is going to fall out, what about the organ on the outside of the body?"
Very true, Lindsay! Both she and fellow female ski jumper, Jessica Jerome sought to gain equality for the sport of ski jumping for many years. They took the IOC to court and sued for the opportunity to compete in the Olympics in Vancouver, but lost the lawsuit. Finally after many years, the IOC announced in 2011 that women's ski jumping would be a sport featured in the Sochi Winter Olympics.


Jessica Jerome, who is also the 2009 world champion in ski jumping was overjoyed when she heard the news that she would finally be able to compete in the Olympics and fulfill her athletic dreams. She told The Rappler: "I can't really put it into words, it just feels great and it feels like we belong".

It is magnificent that women's ski jumping has finally, after 90 years, been accepted into the Olympic Games. It is no doubt due to the persistence of the female jumpers themselves, who fought for years for equality and the opportunity to compete in the games. Needless to say, this is one giant step--or jump--for women everywhere.

Super Bowl Ads--A Step in the Right Direction?

While watching Super Bowl XLVIII, it was clear that advertisements this year were much more appropriate and less offensive than they have been in previous years. There were less commercials with sexual themes, which many women and families were happy about. 

Comparatively, last year's Super Bowl was noticeably more sexual in nature than Superbowl XLVIII. A notoriously shocking company, GoDaddy.com, has been infamous for ads that are usually always sexual; most recently, the very unorthodox (and very uncomfortable) ad featuring model Bar Rafaeli and a nerd making out, symbolizing the "sexy" and the "smart" sides to GoDaddy.com. 


Surprisingly, this commercial wasn't very well liked among viewers, and was actually one of the lowest rated ads of the night in 2013. Fiat also had a provocative ad campaign last year. As shown in the commercial, a bikini clad beach-lounger is displayed lying on the sand with the camera slowly making it's way to her back, where a scorpion snips off her bathing suit top. 


These are only two of the several sexual advertisements that were shown to families across the country. 

However, this year there were noticeably less sexual advertisements, and more patriotic, feel-good ads. The Coca-Cola commercial featuring different groups of people singing "America the Beautiful" received very positive reviews, along with the commercial from Budweiser documenting a soldier returning from Afghanistan and being welcomed home like a hero. The lieutenant who was being welcomed home seemed to be genuinely touched by the experience.  These commercials were appreciated because they were wholesome, feel-good commercials that everyone can watch together and not feel uncomfortable. 


Some people viewed the change of pace for advertising to be a good thing, most of them being parents or women that are tired of being objectified in the media. A viewer told Fox News Latino that he enjoyed this year's ads more, because they overall lacked raunchy content that would be inappropriate for parents with younger children: "The ads are less funny, but it's easier to watch the Superbowl with your family". 

Many women were also offended by the constant sexually based commercials (like GoDaddy), and refused to purchase the products endorsed by any company that promoted women as merely a way to sell merchandise, because after all, "sex sells" in today's society where women are usually objectified. The reason for the change of content in commercials is greatly due to the fact that companies, GoDaddy for example, actually lost business and as a result tried to change their marketing to be more appropriate and mature. 

Overall, many view this year's Super Bowl ads to be a step in the right direction, as they are noticeably less sexist and inappropriate. Hopefully, this trend will continue in the future and viewers will start to have higher standards on what they are willing to accept from the media.
